Cocktail creations, scenic art trails and backpacking alpacas – things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend

Greetings from the soggy depths of the oh-so-rainy Gold Coast. If, like us, you’ve spent the last fortnight trapped inside like Rapunzel in her castle, wistfully staring out the window in the hopes that our one true love (aka the sun) will come to save us, then get excited because legend says our knight in shining armour is on the way. That’s right, folks, the overlords at the weather bureau have dangled the promise of a sunny weekend right before our eyes. You can bet your bottom dollar that we are chomping at the bit to fling open our windows and run barefoot into those sweet, sweet rays of golden sunshine. If you’re not much of a runner, there are plenty of other exciting events on the Gold Coast from Thursday May 26 until Sunday May 29 that can act as your long-awaited debut out of the house.

Go backpacking with alpacas in the Scenic Rim: This weekend, the ESCAPE in the Scenic Rim Festival is hosting a slew of nature-filled activities that will have you filling your lungs with nothing but the freshest of air. On Friday, you can sit back, relax and take in the wonder of the Wild Film Festival in Boonah. On Saturday, tell the kids to alpaca their bags for a fun-filled day strolling through the Canungra countryside with an alpaca in tow. Alternatively, if you’re seeking something filled with a little more adrenaline, why not join The Escape Raid? This two-day wilderness navigation festival will see teams hiking, kayaking and mountain climbing through the Scenic Rim.

Savour the flavours of expertly mixed cocktails: The after-work cocktail event that has taken Brisbane by storm is arriving on the Gold Coast, with the Savour Series being hosted at the Island Rooftop in Surfers Paradise. You can toast to the end of another work week on Friday evening and sample a bounty of cocktail fusions. This Friday will focus on botanicals and the finesse of a well-balanced gin cocktail. You’ll want to grab a ticket to this one!

Dance along to free live music from Touch Sensitive on The Lawn: There’s something about sitting back and soaking up live tunes that makes life seem that little bit lighter. Add a cold drink and some delicious snacks into the equation, and you have a recipe for a good time. Garden Kitchen & Bar offers just that, a chance to sit in the sunshine, listen to some live tunes and revel in the good vibes with your mates. You can start your weekend on a high note by dropping low and shaking off the work week with free RnB tunes on Friday night from 5:00 pm. From there, head to The Lawn for a sensational free DJ set from Touch Sensitive on Saturday night. If you’re a fan of his electronic ear worms’ Pizza Guy’ and ‘Lay Down’, then you’re guaranteed a good night on the dance floor with his capable hands on the deck. Finally, if a Sunday sesh is more your style, then you won’t want to miss an afternoon of live music from Gold Coast boys, the Mckenzie Band. Let them soundtrack the sunset while you sip on a beverage and enjoy a snack or two from the delicious legends at Container Kitchen.

Sip and savour some raunchy laughs at Blanc de Blanc Encore: Did someone say cabaret? If you prefer your evening’s champagne-soaked and laced with hedonistic intentions, then shimmy on over to the Spiegeltent in Southport’s Broadwater Parklands for Blanc de Blanc Encore. The show is packed full of risqué humour, breathtaking aerials, champagne towers, well-endowed percussionists and one hell of a pillow fight. Pop in the car and head across the border, where you can wind through hinterland villages, stop in to see local artists’ work, participate in activities and craft workshops, and purchase a new piece as part of the Murwillumbah Arts Trail.
