Things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend
Here’s hoping the weather gods are good to us this weekend because the calendar is jam-packed with goodness! There’s Margarita Day fun, soul-queen gigs, fashion markets, Balter’s charity bash and much more – just take a look at this handy rundown. Enjoy, folks!
Food & Drink
Balter Brewery is throwing its support around those affected by the recent Australian bushfires, hosting the Return to Earth Bushfire Relief Fundraiser Gallery and Auction on Friday afternoon and evening. Return to Earth will feature 11 prolific Australian travel, landscape and nature photographers, all of whom are donating their work to the silent auction of Australian themed fine art prints – it all kicks off at 3:00 pm with live music, food, beer and a raffle with prizes from local businesses … dig deep! If you’re keen for a quick trip south on Friday afternoon, Husk Distillery in Tumbulgum is now hosting Husk at Dusk acoustic sessions on Fridays from 5:00 pm – this week the live music will be by Naomi Connell, plus there will be a pop-up barbecue for those wanting a snack! Saturday February 22 is truly one of the greatest days in the calendar – National Margarita Day! Take a peek at our round-up of the Gold Coast’s best Mexican to scope out where to celebrate. The team at La Diosa Mexicana in Surfers Paradise is dropping $10 margaritas all day on Saturday, while down at The Coolangatta Hotel there’s a dedicated margarita menu rolling out alongside Mexican-themed eats.
Free live-music series Summertime Sessions in The Village is back on in Mudgeeraba this Friday – roll out a picnic rug in Cuddihy Park from 5:30 pm and enjoy live tunes from Kate Leopold and Josh Lovegrove. Fleetwood Mac fans will be getting their fix this Friday with Dreams – Fleetwood Mac & Stevie Nicks Show hitting Miami Marketta, while those searching for an evening of old-time blues, jazz and swing can catch Slips and The F.W.’s live (with a beer in hand) at Burleigh Brewing Co this Friday from 4:00 pm. On Saturday, the Gold Coast’s own Roots, Boots & Blues Fest will take over Southport’s Broadwater Parklands for a full day of toe-tapping live music, featuring a killer line-up of local and international blues, country and roots bands. The live beats continue on Sunday with local soul queen Lisa Hunt performing a live show at Tallebudgera Surf Club from 2:00 pm, while from midday to late Broadbeach venues Miss Moneypenny’s, Fat Freddy’s and The Rimini Room will be taken over by Block Party No. 1 – a showcase of more than 14 artists and DJs, which will be the first in a series of live-music events to be held in the Broadbeach precinct. Fun!
Arts, Theatre and Markets
This Saturday, HOTA will host the highly anticipated Secret Broadway event, headlined by none other than Broadway diva and American singer-songwriter Shoshana Bean, who you will definitely recognise from Hairspray, Wicked and Waitress. The show, which is described as part late night sing-a-long and part homage to musical theatre, promises a cabaret of unforgettable musical mayhem hosted by Emmy-Award winner Lance Horne – if you’ve been known to bust out a ballad or two in your time and possess a deep-seated love of musical theatre, then do not miss out on this! Did you hear? Circus show Infamous is back in town! This time, the big-top spiegeltent will be erected at Helensvale on the former NightQuarter site with a series of after-dark shows to roll out from Thursday to Sunday until March 8. With bare-chested acrobats, naughty clowns, saucy dancers, amazing acrobatics and mind-boggling, death-defying acts, you’ll get hot under the collar, slap your knee with laughter, and be on the edge of your seat biting your nails, all in the one show! Sand Safari Arts Festival has also kicked off in Surfers Paradise, featuring works by the country’s best professional sand sculptors who have designed and intricately carved their favourite fairy tale scenes from 10 tonnes of sand – the must-see gallery of works will remain on display until March 1!
As for markets – if you’re in need of new threads (or want to pass on some of your own), there’s the Gold Coast Fashion Market happening at Coolangatta State School on Sunday. If you’ve got little people in your life, you’ll want to be at the Hide & Seek Children’s Market at Elanora High School (also on Sunday).
