Five must-see events at Southport Sharks this spring

Pals, we’re right in the thick of spring – the sun is rearing its head earlier each day, the jeans and jackets have been put to the back of the wardrobe, and the belly-warming merlots have been swapped for bubbly spritzers. Southport Sharks is making the most of the season with a swag of events set to add a little bit of sass to your social calendar. Here are our top picks to give you a taste of what’s to come.

Acoustic Fridays at Cabana Bar
If you’re on the hunt for a swish spot for knock-off drinks, then get Cabana Bar & Lounge on your radar. Treat your ears every single Friday with a killer acoustic set from some of the coast’s most renowned live musicians armed with only their guitars. The talented line-up rotates weekly, so get set for the likes of Michael Evotos (October 13 and November 24), Eleea Navarro (October 20 and November 17) Chris Hutchison (October 27), Paris Lane (November 3) and Free the Genie (November 10). Oh, and treat your tastebuds while you’re at it with Cabana’s moreish new menu (helloooo charcoal sliders) and a cheeky Friday cocktail. Acoustic Fridays kick off at 4:00 pm … give yourself an early mark from the office.

Lady Gaga Monsters Show Tribute
Are you a big fan of Gaga? Well, this is about as close as you’ll get to the real thing. This live show is free (yes, free), which means you can ditch Spotify for the night and enjoy some of Gaga’s biggest hits performed live. It’s a special Halloween-themed show tribute show, so expect all of the bells and whistles like dancers, elaborate costumes (possibly monsters), a live band and, in true style, plenty of Gaga-style theatrics. The Lady Gaga Tribute is being held on Saturday October 28.

The Melbourne Cup at The Birdcage
If you’re not going to actually be in Melbourne for the Cup, then you’ll be happy to know that Cabana Bar & Lounge is bringing the iconic ‘bird cage’ to the Gold Coast for it’s November 7 soiree! Cabana Bar will undergo a magical transformation, providing the ultimate backdrop to sip Mumm champagne and themed cocktails, whilst munching on delicious tapas. There will be a fashion parade, prizes for best dressed, and an eye-catching lolly buffet to top it all off – we always like to finish on a sweet note. This is always a sell-out, so if you’re planning on hanging in the bird cage this year, nab your tickets quickly over here.
Nick Riewoldt Book Launch
Sports nuts (and appreciators of this fine-looking fella), this is for you. AFL legend and all-round good guy Nick Riewoldt will be launching his first book The Things That Make Us at MacKenzie’s Sports Bar on Friday November 10. Olympic medallist Giaan Rooney will be on hand to host the Q&A-style launch. With many ups and downs, this is said to be a compelling story, and far from your stereotypical cookie-cutter footballers book. The event is free, includes light nibbles, and kicks off at 6:00 pm. You’ll also get the chance to have your copy signed by Nick himself.
Hanlon Brothers Live
These lads are killing it on the local music scene. If you haven’t caught a Hanlon Brothers show, then be prepared for a little bit of bump ‘n grind. On Saturday Novemner 11, the group’s upbeat fusion of RnB, soul and hip-hop will be pumping live from the Main Stage. So, grab your crew, have a few pre-cocktails and an early nibble at Cabana Bar, then head to the Hanlon Brothers genre-bending show and get your freak on – this is going to be one helleva fun time.
