From Guinness pies to fiery margaritas – five epic events to hit Southport Sharks this March

From Guinness pies to fiery margaritas – five epic events to hit Southport Sharks this March

Even though summer is wrapping up, there’s no need to go into hibernation just yet! There are still plenty of things to see, eat and do across this fine city of ours and Southport Sharks is giving you plenty of reasons to get out and about this March. From Lepechaun luck and loaded fries to live tunes, here are a few for the calendar.

Mexicana at Cabana
Holy guacamole! Cabana Bar & Lounge is feeling the fiesta vibes this March with mouth-watering food and drink specials that will whisk you away to Mexico. Pick at a plate of sweet potato street fries loaded with black bean salsa, queso, avocado and jalapeno or go all out with three shredded beef chimichangas with molten cheddar, guacamole, corn salsa and lime for a cheeky $12.50. Wash it all down with a refreshingly tart Floral Palamo cocktail or, if you can handle a little heat, perhaps the jalapeno watermelon margarita is more your vibe?

Live Acoustic Sessions
Whether you’re winding down from a busy working week or kicking on with a Sunday sesh – Cabana Bar & Lounge has you sorted with live acoustic sessions every Friday night from 5:00 pm and Sunday afternoon from 12:30 pm. Kicking things off in style is the raw talent of Kris Wason on March 2 followed by Chelsea Berman’s relaxed country vibes on Sunday March 4. Loop pedal pro Chris Hutchinson will take the stage on March 9 and Cabana favourite Michael Eotvos returns on Friday March 16. First-timer Maddy Thompson will perform on Sunday March 18 and is guaranteed to transport you to a happy place. Kicking back with a beverage (or two), tasty tapas and live music? It doesn’t get much better than that.

St. Patrick’s Day with O’Leary & The Munster Bucks
In case you missed the memo, Saturday March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, which for many (most) is an excuse to don green attire and indulge in a cheeky tipple. If this sounds like your bag, line your belly with a traditional Guinness Pie at Frenzy’s Food Court before heading over to Cabana Bar & Lounge for a Lepechaun cocktail, which is every bit as delicious as it sounds. Once you’ve limbered up, it’s time to hit the dance floor to show off your best Irish dance moves from 8:30 pm when O’Leary & The Munster Bucks hit the main stage. Performing both traditional and contemporary music from some of Irelands most beloved musicians, the band perfectly embodies the Irish culture and passion for music. There will even be a special performance from traditional Irish dancers.

The Feramones
If Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, The Eagles and the Doobie Brothers are amongst your most-played, we’re willing to go out on a limb and suggest you might enjoy The Feramones on Friday March 23. The Byron Bay-based supergroup will turn back the clock so you can relive some of the all-time classics from the 60s, 70s and 80s (even if you weren’t actually alive the first time around). The six-piece ensemble comprises a collection of internationally-acclaimed musicians including lead guitarist Rick Fenn (10cc), Alan Park (Cliff Richard’s musical director and pianist), guitarist Alan Limbrick (Mike Oldfield, Joan Armatrading, David Knopfler), bassist Greg Lyon (Rodriguez, Hip Pocket, Crossfire), singer Colin Germano (Bourbon Street, Late for Woodstock) and drummer Rick Lloyd (RAM, Late for Woodstock), so they’re no rock rookies.

First Home NEAFL Game
Love footy? The 2018 season is shaping up to be a huge year for Southport Sharks, can they take out premiership? Don’t miss the Sharks’ first home game on Saturday April 21 as they take on Aspley Hornets for round three of the NEAFL. All the action starts at 1:00 pm with first bounce from 1:30 pm. Get right up amongst the action from the front row at Fankhauser Reserve or relax and take it all in from above in one of Cabana Bar & Lounge’s open-air cabanas.

Save the Date: If you’re making plans for Easter, Sharks is the place to be on Sunday April 1 for the Kids Easter Show from 5:00–7:00 pm on Sunday and Acoustic Soup from 7:30 pm. Ben Hanna is in Cabana from 12:30–5:00 pm.
