Strap yourselves in and experience the Sideshow series at The Arts Centre Gold Coast

The Basement – have you been? It’s the underground hub of creative magic at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Now, things are about to get edgy, sassy and a little bit naughty down there and you’ll definitely want to be a part of it. Every Friday and Saturday night, The Basement is hosting a new series of musical-theatre performances called Sideshow. This rotating melting pot of hilariousness, sophistication and unapologetic acts is sure to add a dash of cheekiness to your weekends. Here are our super-saucy top picks to give you a little taste.

The Greenroom Project: Three in One, October 21
If sleek cabaret is more your style, then venture to The Basement for The Greenroom Project. We’re told to ‘expect the unexpected’ with this one, as three up-and-coming cabaret artists hit the stage together to road test all-new material, creating an exciting and left-of-centre musical fusion. Grab a vino, sit back and get jazzed by this threesome.

Ruby Slipper Chronicles, November 3–4
The Sideshow series will also feature the international premiere of Ruby Slipper Chronicles – a satirical, thrilling and evocative Wizard of Oz-style theatre show featuring cabaret, pop tunes and a splash of country. This captivating cabaret takes you on the journey of US expat Aurélie Roque, travelling on the yellow-brick road to Australia. The show has been eloquently described by one line – ‘droppin’ houses on witches, stealin’ shoes from bitches’. Yep, we’re in.

The 27 Club, November 10–11
You won’t want to miss the heart-stopping ode to musicians who left our world too soon when The 27 Club hits the stage on Friday November 10 and Saturday November 11 – think the best hits from the likes of icons like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. This showcase will feature poetry, verbatim interviews, candid journal entries and, of course, a swag of your all-time favourite musical renditions.

Carlotta: Queen of the Cross, November 17–18
Head to The Basement to go on an extraordinary journey with Carlotta – a politically minded Australian icon, whose brutal honesty will leave you in stitches. With renowned cabaret performer Michael Griffiths at her side on the piano, Carlotta will take you through her outrageous life on and off the stage through live songs and stories. Expect classic tunes by Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hart, Stephen Sondheim and Carlotta’s good friend Peter Allen.

Yana Alana’s Greatest Tits, December 8–9
The Sideshow series wraps up for 2017  with one of Australia’s most talented cabaret stars Sarah Ward and her revealing and musically divine show, Yana Alana’s Greatest Tits (yes, that title has us very intrigued). Yana Alana is Sarah Ward’s alter ego, who graces the stage with her talented band Tha Paranas to deliver a hilarious and totally confronting show-stopping performance that is not to be missed.

Pals, that is just the tip of the iceberg. If you’ve been racking your brain about how to jazz up your weekend, then let Sideshow take the reigns. Jump online for a full run-down on all of the Sideshow events, show times and for ticket bookings.
