Throw your horns up – School of Rock brings its musical mayhem to Queensland for the first time

Let’s be honest – even if you’re not the most musically talented individual, most of us at some point have dreamed of living the rockstar life. Touring the world, legions of adoring fans and looking like a badass all in the name of your job sounds like a pretty sweet gig, right? Well in the immortal words of AC/DC, it turns out that it’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock’n’roll – and sometimes you need to enlist the help of a few pint-sized pals to help you on your way. If you’ve ever caught yourself fantasising about a life on the stage, listen up – School of Rock is hitting QPAC from July 12 with a tidal wave of humour, cheek and true rock’n’roll soul.

When you take into account that it comes from the genius mind of Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on a smash-hit movie, School of Rock the musical is automatically set up to be one hell of a ride. Since opening on Broadway back in 2015, the production has garnered some serious critical acclaim and smashed records harder than a high-hat cymbal during a drum solo. With a production dream team including three-time Tony nominee Glenn Slater and Downton Abbey’s Oscar-winning Julian Fellowes on board, as well as a cast including legit musicians (yep, even the kids), this is one show that walks the talk when it comes to authenticity.

In case you haven’t seen the movie (who even are you?!), School of Rock follows failed rockstar and general loser Dewey Finn – posing as a prep school teacher to make some extra cash, he takes his class of straight-laced bookworms and turns them into a band of guitar-shreddin’, bass-slappin’ cool kids. Die-hard fans of the movie take note – the stage production has a brand-new twist in the storyline, as Dewey takes time out of his busy teaching schedule to fall in love with the beautiful but uptight headmistress Miss Mullins. This deviation from the movie adds a bit of a cute note to the originally rock-heavy mentor story, but you can rest assured that the romance doesn’t take away from the core theme – music, baby!

All pumped up and ready for some head-banging action? You can get your hot little hands on tickets to School of Rock through QPAC.
