From aerial yoga to freestyle basketball – what’s in store at Festival 2018’s Broadbeach Roundabout Stage

Get set, Gold Coast – the Commonwealth Games are finally here! Now, you’ve probably heard that the magic will extend well beyond the sporting fields, stadiums and swimming pools, thanks to a killer program of arts and cultural events called Festival 2018. We know it can be a lot to take in – last week we nutted out the happenings on the Main Stage in Surfers Paradise, and this week we’ve got the low-down on the Roundabout Stage in the heart of Broadbeach. Here’s what to expect.

April 4–7
Stravinsky’s classical masterpiece ‘The Rite of Spring’ will be brought to life in an explosion of physical movement and circus theatrics with RITE – brace yourself as ten insanely talented acrobats come together in a genre-bending performance that sees classical music and the art of circus collide in spectacular fashion. The first RITE performance kicks off on Wednesday April 4, then continues with two performances a day until Sunday April 8. Then, the daring athleticism and high-powered choreography of SURGE will grace the Roundabout Stage twice-daily from Thursday April 5 until Sunday April 8. Urban circus 360 Allstars will up the ante even more from April 5–8, with a series of electrifying performances that merges breakdancing, beatboxing, BMX flat-landing, basketball freestyling, drumming and an acrobatic wheel – you’ll want to see this more than once. On Friday April 6 and Saturday April 6, the Roundabout Stage will take you on a voyage through the deep with a 25-person performance called Sea by Brisbane’s inclusive theatre company Blue Roo – a performing arts company for people with physical disability, intellectual impairment and people living with mental health issues.

April 8–11
Mallakhamb is an ancient sporting art form that is rarely seen outside India – it’s a mix of wrestling, gymnastics and aerial yoga and you’ll get to witness five of India’s best Mallakhamb artists push their bodies to the edge with Mallakhambindia, which will explode onto the Roundabout Stage with two performances daily from Monday April 9 to Wednesday April 11. If you’re into hip hop (who isn’t?) then you won’t want to miss Soweto Skeleton Movers between April 9–11 – these rubber-limbed dancers will blow your mind with cheeky contortionism, fun beats and killer footwork. The Circus Corridor, a collective of contemporary circus creatives driving innovative physical performing arts on the Gold Coast, are behind physical-theatre performance The Rising, which will hit the stage from April 9–11. We’re told The Rising will explore Australia’s paradoxical love affair with water in the age of climate change – yep, we’re intrigued. Then, on April 10 prepare to be blown away by a powerful blend of ancient and modern dance with eXcelsior – a spectacular fusion of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance and contemporary genres.

April 12-15
The stage will get physical beyond imagination when Jumping Point heads into the spotlight from Thursday April 12 to Sunday April 15 – expect a magical performance of acrobatics and aerial feats by some of the country’s most talented rising circus stars. BLOCK, a powerful fusion of dance performance created by two of the UK’s leading dance and circus companies, will take the stage twice-daily from April 12–15 – prepare to be mesmerised by thrilling physicality, daring acts and pure talent. We’re pumped to finally see Yes, We Dance come to life from April 12–15 – this features ten everyday Gold Coasters, who are matched with two choreographers and an ensemble of hundreds of community dancers – it could be your neighbour, your plumber or your barista on stage busting a move … you’ll definitely want to check this one out. Finally, New Zealand’s Movement of the Dance have come across the ditch to bring us Hurihuri – a very traditional Pacific performance that collides with urban street culture to create a buzzing, high-energy performance against a live soundscape of drums, electronic loops and traditional Maori instruments. Catch Hurihuri on stage twice daily from April 12–15.
