Sam Cranstoun examines architectural history with Retro Modern

This exhibition takes a look at the facades and dwellings found on the Gold Coast, revisiting the origins of architectural style and its place in history.

The iconic style of Gold Coast suburbia is one that has been forged through decades of transformation and building upon what came before. Despite the modernised business centres, much of the Coast’s suburban fringe exemplifies the coastal architecture of mid-century modernism. Archibald Prize finalist, Sam Cranstoun, has decided to examine the recognisable style in his new exhibition Retro Modern, which is being shown at Miami gallery The Walls from July 4 to 18.

Using photograph6y, painting, drawing, sculpture and installation practices, Sam’s exhibition will look at how history is shaped by different systems of representation. The role of the monument, how it functions and works as a tool to assist memory and how visual style can be reduced to monochromatic form and re-examined are only some of the nuanced goals of this exhibition. Be sure to catch this exhibition as it reflects the growth and role of the Coast’s recognisable architectural style.
