Diva camels set to steal the show at the Griffith Opera on the Beach in Coolangatta

Camels have been cast in a beachfront opera that will be staged on the sand of Coolangatta beach this September. That’s right, we said camels in a beachfront opera. The two diva camels, draped in luxurious gold-trimmed costumes, will form part of Opera Australia’s Griffith Opera on the Beach – Aida , with six performances to be staged from September 21–30.

The camels are named Sid and Daisy, they live in Sydney, and they’ll be venturing up the Gold Coast next month, making nightly appearances at the Griffith Opera on the Beach – Aida. Now, Aida is a universal production steeped in history – it first premiered in 1871 and is known for its extravagant outdoor performances, with a long-standing tradition of casting live animals. We reckon Sid and Daisy will feel right at home on the sand of Cooly beach.

The Gold Coast production of Aida will see a pretty impressive Egyptian-style pop-up stage erected on the beachfront, which lights up to create quite the spectacle by night. Whilst the camels are a rare treat, they aren’t the only talented stars in the show. Some of Australia’s most renowned singers including Natalie Aroyan, Michael Honeyman, Milijana Nikolic and Gennadi Dubinsky will be creating the masterpiece with a little help from a 55-person chorus, consisting entirely of Gold Coast singers. Aida will play six performances from 21 – 30 September.
