Meet the artists behind the masterpieces at the Noosa Open Studios annual art trail
With the weather outlook warm and breezy and our hunger for a weekend getaway more apparent than ever, we think it’s time for a dose of cultural goodness. For a substantial helping of eye-catching art and picturesque scenery, take a roadtrip north for Noosa Open Studios, an annual art trail where gifted local artists open the doors to their studios so you can get a behind-the-scenes look into their work – and maybe even find a piece (or two) to take home.
This year, the sixth annual Noosa Open Studios will be held over ten days from Friday October 1 to Sunday October 10 across the breathtaking Noosa region. Inviting art lovers to explore all that Noosa has to offer from coast to countryside, Queensland’s largest open-studios event allows you to meet and greet the artists – from painters and potters to ceramicists, sculptors and metalworkers – behind the art. This year, there are more than 100 artists involved in the event. Sculptor Alison Comber will once again be showcasing her robot sculptures at her Peregian Beach studio, master pastellist and oil painter Anne Yang will display her vibrant pastel and oil pieces in her studio gallery in Lake MacDonald, and painter Colin Passmore will show off his exciting colour combinations and distinctive brush work at his Peregian Beach hub. Other artists include ceramist and sculptor Amanda Harth, ceramicist Jenny McElhinney, mixed-media artist and sculptor Bronwyn Innes and ceramicist and founder of Pottery for the Planet Renton Bishopric.
Noosa boasts a bounty of world-class galleries to stop at during your trip including the riverside Noosa Regional Gallery and hinterland highlights like the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre and Pomona Railway Station Gallery. The trail is becoming even more enticing this year, with a huge range of interactive workshops held by some of the region’s beloved local artists on offer. There’s everything from painting classes and raku pottery firing through to brush making, mixed media and lantern crafting. In the lead-up to Noosa Open Studios, art admirers can get their fix with Noosaville activation Deckchairs on Green, which features 40 locally painted canvases fixed to regionally sourced hardwood frames that have been handcrafted by the local Cooroora Woodworkers. You can set your peepers on the impressive deckchairs along the Noosa River on Saturday September 25 and even bid to take your favourite deckchair home at a charity auction at Noosa Botanic Gardens on Sunday September 26.
