Save the date – Kalbar Sunflower Festival is returning with blooms, bites and artistic delights

When life deals you a drought, grow sunflowers and they will come. This is what a farming family in Kalbar did in 2021, and the result was a one-day celebration of flowers and family-friendly fun. Now, the annual Kalbar Sunflower Festival is back for another year so gather your gang and get ready to go road-tripping from March 25–27, and make sure to stop and smell the, uh, sunflowers.

In a real ‘when life hands you lemons, make lemonade’ moment, Kalbar Sunflower Festival bloomed from the devastating aftermath of drought. Last year, when Kalbar-based farming family Russell and Jenny Jenner had been struggling due to the ongoing drought that plagued Queensland, they decided to plant sunflowers instead of hay – 200,000 of them, to be exact. These golden beauties will once again soon be in bloom and they are a picture-perfect canvas for the area’s second annual sunflower festival.

The festival has a huge program of fun-filled events that’s set to be released mid February but we’ve got a small taste of what’s on offer. Like the previous year, visitors can wander through the sunflower field (and yes, get that cheeky Insta pic), stretch out at a sunrise yoga session amongst the flowers, get crafty with art classes, and test their culinary skills with cooking classes using, you guessed it, sunflowers. For something truly special, hungry folk can fill their bellies at a sunset dinner backdropped by thousands of florals – now talk about a magical meal!

Tickets for Kalbar Sunflower Festival will go on sale shortly after the program announcement next month. Pop on those flower crowns and make tracks here to learn more.
