Take a trip down memory lane back to when crochet bikinis rode high above the hips and beer bellies were celebrated at Graham Burstow’s Flesh: The Gold Coast in the 1960s, 70s and 80s exhibition at Gold Coast City Gallery at The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

Ever since Paula Stafford strutted onto a Gold Coast beach wearing an itsy bitsy bikini in the 1940s, the Gold Coast has had a reputation for fun. Flesh: The Gold Coast in the 1960s, 70s and 80s invites you to take a peek at the Gold Coast’s evolution through the lens of photographer, Graham Burstow. The celebrated photographer, now in his 90s, holidayed here with his family from Toowoomba and documented his adventures on his black and white film camera.

The exhibition captures a bygone, unabashed era on the Gold Coast, a time when leggy ladies paraded daring swimsuits that were almost definitely not for swimming, ample-girthed gents would compete in beer belly contests and basically everyone was slathered in Mutton Bird tanning oil. Flesh: The Gold Coast in the 1960s, 70s and 80s will be on display from Thursday October 23 to December 6.
