Captain Cook’s first contact with Australia explored in East Coast Encounter
The Arts Centre Gold Coast is hosting an exhibition of work detailing the interaction between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, looking as far back as Captain Cook’s landing in 1770.
In an effort to promote cultural dialogue and mutual understanding, East Coast Encounter has brought together a collection of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists for an exhibition of art that recounts the first contact between British explorers and the Indigenous population of Australia. From April 25 to June 7, The Arts Centre Gold Coast will host East Coast Encounter in it’s Gallery 2 for public viewing.
Artists involved include Bianca Beetson, Michael Cook, Euan Macleod, Arone Meeks, Reg Mombassa and Judy Watson. The Arts Centre Gold Coast will also host an opening night event on Saturday May 2 where the artists and curators will discuss the exhibited work and the significance of Cook’s mapping of the east coast of Australia. The opening event will be followed by a free concert by Neil Murray and Friends on the same evening, and an artist masterclass will take place on Sunday May 3.
