Film buffs can expect a thought-provoking 2019 edition of BBFF, featuring 22 documentaries, 17 dramatic features, 20 music videos, 78 shorts, 10 films by young Australian filmmakers and a jaw-dropping series of 15 virtual-reality experiences. Each event and screening in the curated program was selected from more than 1000 films submitted from all corners of the globe. BBFF’s 2019 program aims to reflect the interests of the people of Byron and the Northern Rivers region – the environment, surfing, music, art, alternative lifestyles and social and spiritual awareness.

A red-carpet gala screening of Measure for Measure (starring Hugo Weaving) will kick off the festival at Palace Cinemas in Byron Bay on Friday October 18, paving the way for a raft of must-see films. There’s Yuli, the story of gifted ballet dancer Carlos Acosta, as well as documentary concept She is Ocean by acclaimed director Innesse Blohina, alongside stories of a traditional beekeeper (Honeyland) and the last male northern white rhino (Kifaru). The closing gala will feature an unmissable screening of The Cave – a dramatic study of the 2018 rescue of the football team trapped in a cave in northern Thailand.
