Spend a day picnicking, petting alpacas and learning about sustainable food practices at Ella’s Farm
Ella’s Farm is situated on a sprawling property in Bilambil Heights in Northern New South Wales. First and foremost, it is a certified organic permaculture farm dedicated to growing nutrient dense, chemical-free produce and educating the community about sustainable farming practices and organic food. A passion project for mother daughter duo Ella and Libby, Ella’s Farm has been around since 2016 but only opened to the public in 2019. Their goal is to empower the community with knowledge and skills to foster wellbeing for person and planet.
Sprawling 20-glorious acres, Ella’s Farm is the escape from city life that you didn’t know you needed until right this second. If you feel most at home barefoot amongst nature, this is definitely a place to disconnect with technology and reconnect with Mother Nature. The farm itself is home to a wide variety of animals including cheeky alpacas, chickens, ducks and geese, which you can meet (and cuddle) on one of its popular farm tours. Once a month, Ella’s Farm opens its doors to welcome guests for its ever-popular gourmet picnics, which are every bit as dreamy as they sound. Roll out a rug and soak in the magnificent hilltop ocean views before diving into a sumptuous spread from Nectar Juice House and Kat Harvey Cheese. If you fancy, round-out the experience with a natural and chemical-free wine tasting from the Gold Coast’s own OK Wines, which we strongly recommend. The whole experience is 2.5 hours and bookings are recommended as they have been known to sell-out in advance. For those who have toyed with the idea of growing their own food but haven’t the faintest idea where or how to start, Ella’s Farm can help. Every Saturday, the farm opens to a host of volunteers who are eager to get their hands dirty and learn a little more about where their food comes from. If one single day is simply not enough, Ella’s hosts a practical short course including a two-day introduction to permaculture and regenerative farming for $270. For those who really like to throw themselves all in and are perhaps looking for a life-change, Ella’s also offers a seven-week internship, which includes a Permaculture Design Certificate.
Love eating and drinking? Ella’s Farm is also hosting The Sustainable Table event on March 13, which will bring together local creatives, thinkers and businesses for an afternoon of inspiration and idea pollination over a couple of bio-dynamic wines concluding with dinner from chef Adam Guthrie.
