Somewhere along the way in the busy lives we all live, the connection was lost between people, their food and how they ate it. In a world where mass production rules the roost, it’s easy to look for convenience over quality in so many ways. Here at The Weekend Edition, we’re all for slowing down and enjoying the magic around us. So, when we came across handmade tableware maker Kinfolk & Co., we knew the company’s ethos of slow design, mindful purchasing and less consumption was something we just had to harp on about.

Kinfolk & Co. is the brainchild of Brunswick Heads-based creative Aysha Monticone, who set out to create a range of products that focus on craftsmanship and reflect the unique nature of the handmade process. Inspired by nature and a passion for good food, the Kinfolk & Co. range of tableware is designed to bring the art of food making back to its roots by establishing a connection between people and the process of creating a wholesome meal. The pieces are designed and handmade by local artisans, with an ethical, sustainable and raw mindset.

Kinfolk & Co.’s fermentation pots are a real winner in our eyes – it’s a simple (and good-looking) crock-pot-like tool to create delicious fermented vegetables at home … hooray for gut health! The 2-litre fermentation crock pot is perfect for either the seasoned or casual fermenter, and the lid even doubles as a bowl to serve your own kraut in. What a dream. The Kinfolk & Co. collection also features a functional range of contemporary mugs, mini pitchers, mixing bowls, serving bowls and plates, plus a series of handcrafted wood products like chopping and serving boards, wooden spoons and tampers. For lovers of linen, you can also get your hands on the pocketed apron, Japanese bio-washed linen bowl covers, tea towels and a wonderful linen market bag. It’s brands like Kinfolk & Co., which showcase a true passion for the handmade craft, that truly stand out in this fast-paced world we live in – and boy is it refreshing.
