Created to celebrate urban design projects that have enhanced the city’s image and quality of life for residents and visitors, the Gold Coast Urban Design Awards have become the city’s most prestigious platform for recognition of design, liveability and sustainability. In 2017, Parklands was the major winner taking out the coveted Helen Josephson Award for Urban Design Leadership as well as the Excellence in Urban Design Award. The project, by AAA – a joint venture between architects Arkhefield, ARM and Archipelago, is recognised as the Gold Coast’s largest urban-renewal project – set to accommodate 6,500 athletes and team officials as the Commonwealth Games village. Post games, it will become a legacy for the city – a vibrant, inclusive and connected urban mixed-use space.

Also recognised with Urban Design Awards were the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre by Cardno, BVN and John Graham, and City Village by Robina Projects Australia and Andrew Halstead Architects. The Oasis Shopping Centre redevelopment and the Griffith University Student Guild Bar and Link Eatery Push were both acknowledged with a commendation. Established in 1998, the Gold Coast Urban Design Awards acknowledge individuals, businesses and projects that have contributed to the city’s image and renowned lifestyle.
