Gold Coast Open House gives you the keys to the city

As locals, we’re often so focussed on getting from A to B that we don’t stop and take in our surroundings to appreciate just how far this fabulous city has come. So, consider Gold Coast Open House your chance to slow down, enjoy and revel in the evolution of architecture on the Gold Coast by getting a tour of some of the city’s most iconic spaces. The event, held on Saturday October 19, will see 56 interesting spaces – some of which are generally closed to the public – opened up for just one day for your viewing pleasure.

Lovers of design and architecture, we’ve got some exciting news – Gold Coast Open House is back and celebrating its fifth birthday by rolling out its largest and most ambitious program to date. For one day only, the event is unlocking the doors to historic landmarks, architectural marvels, award-winning private residences, schools, universities, sporting facilities, museums and public utilities and offering an exciting program of walks, tours, workshops and fringe events all across this fine city. This year, the program extends its footprint offshore with tours of Stradbroke House and the maritime resort village of Couran Cove, over the border with a bus tour to three award-winning architect designed homes in northern New South Wales and sky high to visit a four-level Surfers Paradise penthouse. Kids can even see inside a real working fire station or see how things work inside a television broadcast studio.

History buffs, you’re invited to step back in time by exploring the heritage-listed Southport Bathing Pavilion, which has stood tall since 1934, and uncover stories from the early 1900s by exploring The Residence and Mr PP’s, as well as Southport Town Hall. Meander through Mudgeeraba on a guided tour that takes a look at some of the iconic heritage buildings including the Post Office, Bakery and Railway Park before making a pit-stop at the famous Wallaby Hotel. The well-known Paradise Waters residence built by tourism icon and Sea World founder, the late Keith Williams, will join homes in Mermaid Beach, Miami and Pottsville in the program’s collection of private residences that will open their doors for the day. For a taste of contemporary architecture, jump on tours inside some of the city’s most esteemed buildings like the Abedian School of Architecture and St Hilda’s School and if it’s industrial architecture that intrigues you, this is your chance to check out the Gold Coast Desalination Plant and the Sand Bypass System at The Spit, Main Beach. And folks, that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
