Stage two of Gold Coast Light Rail gets green light

The anticipated second stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail will be delivered in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games after all three levels of Government committed to fund the extension.

Stage two of the Gold Coast Light Rail network will provide the missing link from the Gold Coast to Brisbane and will connect the end of stage one in Southport to the Helensvale train station. The 7.3 kilometre northern extension will run from the Gold Coast University Hospital west along Smith Street and continue north, parallel to the rail line. The development will include a new park ‘n’ ride facility at Parkwood and will provide an integral part of Commonwealth Games infrastructure, connecting five competition venues and nine events to accommodation and public transport interchanges.

Now a funding agreement has been secured, the Queensland Government will seek to appoint a preferred contractor in early 2016 with construction expected to begin in April 2016. The Gold Coast Light Rail has become the backbone of the public transport network and stage one has driven a 25 percent increase in public transport patronage in the first year.
