The Weekend Series: DIY furniture hacks to try this weekend

It’s a problem we all face from time to time – you look around your abode and think to yourself, damn this place is bo-ring. You spend hours browsing dream bedrooms on Pinterest and lust after chic living rooms in Habitus magazine, but when it comes to applying ideas in your own space … sometimes you just don’t have the skrills. What you DO have though, is SKILLS. This Easter long weekend, put those hands to work and get creative with an ingenious DIY furniture hack that won’t break the bank.

Marble bedside table: Marble is very Insta-worthy at the moment, but not really affordable for a humble suburban apartment. The video above gives you a cheat’s version of a marble bedside table, using a simple TARVA bedside table from IKEA and cheap-as-chips marble contact paper.

Pastel bar cart: Do you have a bunch of swanky spirits hidden away in a cupboard, when you really want them proudly on display Mad Men style? This DIY from Style Me Pretty is a little more labour intensive, but transforms IKEA’s VITTSJÖ laptop table into a minimalist bar cart.

Colour-dipped bar stools: The colour-dipped trend is super cute at the moment, but you might get sick of it in years to come. If you don’t want to dish out the big bucks, pick up a couple of Nino bar stools from Fantastic Furniture and DIY your own with this tutorial from Brit + Co.

Minimalist side table: The Clever Bunny is very clever indeed, turning an old metal-frame laundry hamper into a simple black and timber side table. This DIY uses an IKEA hamper similar to the SKUBB, but you can pick up any hamper with a sturdy metal frame.

The incredible versatile candle holder: This $7 geometric Kmart candle holder has been the subject of a number of decor hacks of late. Pick a couple up to create pendant lights, vases, hanging planters … or, you can just use it as a candle holder.
