Southport gets set to welcome independent cinema brand Dendy to the Gold Coast
Film buffs will be delighted to learn that leading independent cinema and film distributors, Dendy Cinemas, is coming to the Gold Coast. The brand, known for showcasing quality and alternative content, will form part of the $55o-million Queen Street Village project, which lies on the former Gold Coast Hospital site in the heart of Southport.
The Gold Coast’s first Dendy Cinemas will feature a 12-screen complex, bringing a broad range of international films, from arthouse productions through to theatre and opera screenings. Being an independent cinema, Dendy curates its content to ensure a differentiated movie offering – so you can expect an intriguing collection of films and productions to roll out.
You’ll have to contain your excitement for a little longer yet – construction of Southport’s Dendy complex is expected to begin next year, and will be operational from 2020. Once developed, the cinemas will sit within the Queen Street Village mixed-use community, alongside three residential buildings, a 160-room Mercure hotel, a medical centre and commercial office space. This is the third Queensland complex for Dendy, which also operates a 10-theatre complex in Coorparoo and the boutique Portside cinema in Hamilton.
