Stage one of the Gold Coast’s Cultural Precinct unveiled

The eagerly anticipated first stage of the Gold Coast’s Cultural Precinct at Evandale has been unveiled. The stage, estimated to be worth $37 million, is part of the wider $305 million master-plan that will transform the precinct into the city’s cultural hub.

Featuring a striking outdoor stage that resembles a giant water splash from the adjacent Nerang River, a Riverside Hub and initial Artscape works, the first stage is expected to commence early 2016 and be completed in time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Splash concept, emerging from the proposed grassed amphitheatre, was designed by ARM architecture and Topotek1 and will be subjected to detailed design development over the coming months. The space was created as a uniquely Gold Coast response to a need for a truly versatile outdoor performance area and will cater for audiences up to 5,000 and stage a wide range of civic events and performances. The works will also see the existing Riverside Building adapted to provide a transitional, enhanced City Gallery exhibition space and places for creative partnerships, civic receptions and a cafe. The Artscape works program will deliver artistic programming, markets, festivals, cinema and family recreation.

Future stages of the Gold Coast’s Cultural Precinct will be delivered after 2018 and will include a 14-storey Arts Museum tower that will include bungee jumping facilities, new and refurbished performing arts facilities and completion of the outdoor Artscape works. The plan also includes space designated to retail and cafes.
