Get deep and a little dirty with Crockd’s at-home clay kit
Despite being more connected than ever before, loneliness is on the rise and right now, in Australia one million adults are living with depression and over two million with anxiety (according to Beyond Blue). Rather than become statistics themselves, Burleigh Heads-locals Rosa-Clare Willis and Andrew Ford made the decision to get out of their heads and into their hands by dabbling in a little at-home pottery. The result was something unexpected – not only did they connect over a shared (sober) experience but there was a real sense of achievement having created something from nothing and just like that, the idea for Crockd was born.
In essence, Crockd is a fun at-home clay kit that enables people to learn the art of pottery without the pressure of a formal workshop, but it’s also much more than that – it’s a kit that is purposefully designed to bring people together over meaningful conversations and busy hands. The idea is to use pottery as a catalyst for conversation by providing a distraction for your hands, so you can talk a little less awkwardly about things that really matter and connect on a more human level. To get the crafternoon rolling, each kit includes a series of ‘clay breakers‘ – think of it like an ice-breaker but instead of being in a room full of strangers at a lame networking event, you’re at home with your best pal/significant other/mother/neighbour and with questions like ‘what do you love about yourself’. Things are guaranteed to get deep – but that’s all part of the Crockd experience.
The kit itself includes everything you need to get a little dirty, including enough clay to make two cups each, carving tools and easy-to-follow instructions and once you’ve created your masterpiece, you’ll receive a list of the local firing kilns near you. Crockd kits for two peeps start at $80 or – if you’re keen to gather your gaggle – you can get Crockd for four for $120. If you’re keen for less beers, more tears (of the happy kind), filthy hands and a clear mind – get Crockd here.
