Indigenous artists and NORTH present the Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection
A talented group of Tiwi women have spent the past 12 months collaborating with not-for-profit social enterprise NORTH to share their culture through fashion.
Pre-orders are now open for the Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection, an impressive assembly of artistic apparel screen-printed by the deft hands of Indigenous artists living remotely on the shores of the Tiwi Islands, off the coast of Darwin. Women from Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti and Wurrumiyanga have designed some magnificent pieces, from 100-percent linen shift dresses to tailored jumpsuits, cropped camis, men’s shorts, hand-painted silk scarves and much more. The pre-order campaign will fund manufacturing of the Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection, with orders being filled from August.
Female artists from the Munupi, Jilamara and Ngaruwanajirri Art Centres share their stories of connection to country through these beautiful designs, which will soon be worn by fashion admirers around the world. The collection is made in Australia using ethical and sustainable manufacturing processes to minimise its environmental impact. Not-for-profit charity and Indigenous Art Code member NORTH has helped bring the Tiwi Strong Women’s Collection to life in the hope it will empower artists, strengthen community pride and broaden the exposure of remote Indigenous textile design.
