The Artful Dodger: Get fit with dodgeball

While dodgeball may conjure up unfortunate images of a hot pants-adorned Ben Stiller in the movie namesake, there is a lot more to the game than questionable lycra outfits. From its beginnings in the playground, dodgeball has seen a recent comeback as a social ball sport for adults.

For Brisbanites, there is a dodgeball league located in two different locations surrounding the CBD. The Scoreline Sports Dodgeball League holds Tuesday night competitions at Brisbane Girls Grammar School in Spring Hill, while the Southbank Institute of TAFE offers Friday lunchtime competitions.

Call on your friends, your family and even your work colleagues, as you will need six players, plus substitutes, to qualify for a side. Teams are mixed and can be both corporate and social, but for fairness there is a maximum of four men allowed per side.

The rules of dodgeball are simple – the object of the game is to eliminate your opposing players by hitting them on the full with the ball. At the same time, you will need to avoid their throws but if you make a catch, your opponent is out and your team is able to get a player back in. Games are 40 minutes long, so start practising your ducking and weaving.
