Get out your green thumb – it’s time to garden

With the weather all sunshine and cool breezes at the moment, there’s no better time to get into the garden. September is a good month for planting beetroot, peas, beans, cucumber and silver beet, which will all be ready in time for cooking up family feasts at Christmas. And while the garden might be a dirty place (literally), there’s no reason to use scruffy tubs and tools in your green thumb quests.

The creation of Brisbane-based artisan Susan Volz and her family, Our Kitchen Garden designs and upcycles wares for both the growing and storing of homegrown foodstuffs. Taking a sustainable approach to homewares and utilities design, Our Kitchen Garden recycles wood and metal to create new products, as well as cleaning up classic vintage pieces. Herb and seedling trays provide a temporary home for seedlings to blossom before they are ready to be planted in an upcycled timber planter box or tin trough.

Small square tin planters in sets of three are perfect for separating out herbs, while fruit trees will appreciate the extra backing from bamboo hoop supports. Choose an eco-friendly bamboo-handled spade and trowel for your efforts, while Nutscene coloured twine from Nook will keep bean seedlings growing straight when attached to a support. Nook also stocks an array of herb tags and blackboard-painted garden stakes with accompanying chalk to label your veggie patch.

And being Brisbane, make sure to cover your sprouted and full-grown plants with some netting to prevent pesky possums devouring them overnight.
