You could soon surf the streets on Onewheel
We’ve been dreaming of cruising the streets on a Hoverboard ever since our eyeballs first caught Marty McFly doing his thing in Back to the Future. This fantasy could soon become a partial reality, as the Onewheel crowdfunding campaign comes to a close on Kickstarter.
If you’re usually staring at the back of someone’s head in a bus or train on your journey to work, the daily commute is about to become a whole lot more interesting. A self-balancing electric skateboard is in its final days of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, and with the raised funds already tripling the founders’ original goal, the plans may indeed come to fruition.
Onewheel is a brand-new electric boardsport that takes the idea of pavement surfing to the extreme. Intuitive, self-balancing technology means most new riders get the hang of the contraption within minutes, simply leaning forward to speed up or leaning back to slow down. A 19-cm go-kart tyre means cracks and stones in the footpath won’t be felt like they are under a standard skateboard, and integrated LED lighting will light up your path if you’re taking a night-time trip along Brisbane River. A high-speed charger also means you can fully charge the board within 20 minutes – just enough time for a mid-skate caffeine hit before heading off on your merry way. The motor is integrated into the hub of the wheel, so no techy nasties will be messing with the beauty of the Canadian maple deck. Early adopters have until next Monday January 27 to put their pennies into the campaign.
