The Weekend Series: from waffle pizzas to champagne popsicles – five things we are vibing on in November

As we move from the final days of October to the first few of November, a new wave of inspiration hits us like a revitalising summer breeze. Summer approaches and the days becoming increasingly warmer – we need something cool to take the edge off the heat. If boozy popsicles, hilarious food-centric YouTube channels and waffle pizzas sound pretty cool to you, then you are going to love what we’ve found for you to vibe on this month.

Waffle Pizza
Sometimes we think whoever comes up with these flavour combinations is either an evil genius or someone with a supreme hangover. It seems that some flavour combinations are just meant to be, while others take a little bit of time to discover each other. One new trend we’d love to see is waffles meeting pizza. This dynamic duo caused a bit of a fuss earlier in the year thanks to the work done by Seoul Waffle Pizza in Los Angeles. This eatery (which is currently in the process of moving to a new location – most likely to cater for higher demand) is creating crispy and light pizza-like dishes out of waffles – slightly thicker than a New York style thin crust – with a range of unique toppings. In addition to pepperoni and mozzarella waffle pizzas, Seoul Waffle Pizza also tops its meals with the likes of egg, bacon and maple syrup at brunch, bulgogi, grilled kimchi, garlic shrimp, grilled chicken and pickled onion for dinner, plus much more.

WeArePops
We normally don’t like to stoke the fire of competition between Brisbane and the fancy-schmancy southern states, but this one has us a bit hot under the collar. POPS is a British company that has cornered the market in one of the cleverest concepts to grace out computer screens – champagne popsicles. Yep, you read that right. Picture a Callipo, but made from frozen bubbly. This is a revelation for us in The Weekend Edition office – it’s so quintessentially us that we dribbled on ourselves at the thought of summer days spent putting away champagne and bellini flavoured popsicles. When we heard that POPS was coming to Australia this December our hearts fluttered and then promptly broke when we saw that it was only heading to Melbourne. Shame. Brisbane is the summer capital of Australia (seriously, it’s hot up here and we’re parched), so we can only hope it won’t be long until POPS makes its way to the sunshine state.

FoodTube
Hands up if you’ve ever found yourself stuck in a YouTube spiral. Uh huh, okay that’s most of you. Well, make sure you have a few hours to spare before you read on. One of our favourite pastimes is killing time on YouTube, and we’ve spent so much time browsing that we’ve got a nice collection of favourites going – particularly YouTube channels pertaining to the culinary arts. Some of the funniest food channels on YouTube have been floating around for a while – classics like Epic Meal Time, My Drunk Kitchen and Cooking With Dog are great channels to delve into and have a laugh. Others are great for those looking for easy to follow recipe guides, such as Food Wishes, BBQ Pit Boys, The Simple Cooking Channel and SORTEDFood. Newcomers such as First We Feast (with the supremely excellent interview series Hot Ones) and VICE’s Munchies are mixing up the formula by documenting food stories from different parts of the world. Forget Huey’s Cooking Adventures – this is the cutting edge of food programming.

Viceland
Since the advent of digital channels, free-to-air television has morphed from having a mere five channels (give or take depending on your antenna reception) to boasting two-dozen or more in high definition. As each of the big channels split to create a greater range of content across new channels, SBS is shaking up the former by giving up one of its new digital stations to an outside creator. From Tuesday November 15, SBS 2 will be replaced with SBS VICELAND, a channel of programming which will air the best content from VICE Media’s varied productions. We’re talking shows that cover culture, music, sport, fashion, sexuality, technology and more, as well as some popular SBS programs such as The Feed and SBS Pop Asia.

Bungee Workouts
Okay, I know, the vibes series is pretty food centric. We love food so much we just can’t help it! Just this once we are going to include a cool exercise trend that we like the look of. I know what you are thinking – “Exercise? I don’t think so, buddy!” Don’t leave just yet! This brand of exercise looks really, really fun. Bungee workouts are a new fitness trend that is taking Thailand by storm, thanks to the classes offered by the Stories to Tales Theatre in Bangkok. Participants are clipped in to bungee harnesses, which are attached to the ceiling, then are taken through a series of resistance-based exercises that blend strength and aerobic activity to give a whole-body workout. Just imagine yourself leaping around an open space, bouncing and flipping off walls. It sounds pretty cool, right? No word on if this will make an appearance at gyms in Australia anytime soon, but here’s hoping something like this comes along in the future.
