Mexican dress brisbane

Fashion yourself like Frida with Mexican garb

Never did a person march to the beat of their own drum more so than Frida Kahlo. The Mexican painter was not only renowned for her distinctive artistic creations, but embraced a flamboyant dress code inspired by her Latin heritage. Frida’s colour-saturated wardrobe has not only inspired an exhibition in its honour, but is a trend sweeping Brisbane’s streets.

Frida’s flamboyant dress sense was heavily inspired by traditional folk outfits of Mexico. Intricate weaves and braids formed her hairstyle – a cacophony of rainbow-hued flowers – with mismatched silver jewellery covering her ears and wrists. She also donned traditional peasant skirts and multi-layered blouses, embroidered with the intricate floral detailing for which Mexicans are renowned.

This wardrobe is the subject of the current exhibition at the Frida Kahlo Museum – Frida’s former home in Mexico. More than 300 of the artist’s belongings (including her extravagant array of accessories), will be on display, alongside modern designers’ pieces including those by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier. While you may not be able to make the journey to the exhibition in time, you can embrace a little of its inspiration at home, with plenty of Mexican-inspired cotton shifts moving their way into Brisbane boutiques.

The best way to re-create the style is to pile on the layers. Rummage through vintage stores for dresses and tops, embrace embroidery and silver jewellery. House of Maryanne Vintage also has a selection, with cotton shifts in summery hues.
