Lumber Punks brings the adrenaline-fuelled sport of axe throwing to Brisbane

There was a time when the words ‘axe throwing’ may have filled your heart with terror. Fast-forward to now and you’ll find that hurling a wood-chopping device through the air at a target is actually pretty damn fun when done in the right (read: safe) environment – think of it as a more hardcore version of darts. If this idea is getting you all kinds of excited, we have great news for you – Gold Coast flagship Lumber Punks Axe Throwing is setting up shop in West End, giving you all the tools to toss at timber to your heart’s content.

Lumber Punks Axe Throwing is the joint venture of owners Sam Hay and Tyson McMillan, a pair of creatives who spawned their idea over a couple of beers and a spot of axe throwing in the backyard. Following that fateful business meeting, the dudes opened their flagship Lumber Punks in the Gold Coast suburb of Miami, taking the lead as Queensland’s very first. The combination of kitsch factor, speedy one-site training and pure fun has seen Lumber Punks grow into a raging success. Since the launch in September last year, Lumber Punks has proven to be quite the hit – it has fostered a popular axe-throwing league and even garnered some famous fans (hello, Jason Momoa and Amber Heard).

The crew from Lumber Punks started searching almost immediately for a Brisbane site, finally securing a spot in West End and kitting out the space themselves. The Brisbane Lumber Punks venue is more sizeable that its Gold Coast sibling, boasting a whopping 19 individually contained lanes for your hurling pleasure. Although the name may allude to a more heavy music choice, the facilities at Lumber Punks allow you to choose your own tunes to throw to if you so choose. Axe throwing requires you to keep your wits about you, so this is a dry space – you can satiate yourself with a range of soft drinks, snacks and even non-alcoholic beer.

Lumber Punks Axe Throwing is open to the public from Saturday August 11, so head in to the West End location and check it out! Also keep your eye on the venue’s socials for more opening celebrations in the coming weeks.
