Graphic novel addicts to get their fix at Junky Comics

Stocking the latest and greatest in independent comics and zines, Junky Comics is a welcome edition to West End’s cultural landscape.

Vlada Edirippulige’s love for comic books goes back to her childhood. When she was growing up in Port Macquarie, Vlada’s love for superheroes and their heroic deeds created a lingering addiction to graphic novels of all kinds. As her tastes matured, Vlada discovered the realm of independent comic books and became determined to share her finds with as many people as possible. In early 2014, Vlada started Junky Comics, a simple webstore where people could order underground and cult comics from independent, overseas publishing houses. Junky Comics was initially started in the hopes that it would help remove some of the pretension associated with comic books by opening a proper store that was equal parts welcoming and innovative. On Friday April 10 the dream will be realised as Junky Comics opens its doors to the general public, allowing comic fiends and newcomers to get regular doses of illustrated goodness.

The store is located in the busy suburb of West End – a hop, skip and a jump from much loved hubs such as Jet Black Cat Music and Avid Reader. The space is a comfortable haven that boasts custom-built shelves packed to the brim with comics of all kinds, second-hand couches and wall art. A quick browse of the Junky selection will reveal titles from overseas publishers such as Fantagraphics from America, Drawn and Quarterly from Canada and Nobrow from the UK as well as Australian publishers such as Milk Shadow Books, in addition to select titles from comic book heavyweights DC and Marvel. Junky Comics will also stock a range of zines and shirts made by locals and creative types from around Australia and will host workshops, zine making nights and art exhibitions. The opening of Junky Comics will be celebrated with an opening party and art show in conjunction with the NOFUN collective from 7:00 pm.
