TWE Juniper Ridge

Dowse your limbs in Juniper Ridge backpacker’s cologne

Capturing the woody scent of pine needles as they crunch underfoot and the freshness of the air as you hike to pavilions clear and unadulterated by civilisation, Juniper Ridge is a wild fragrance company bottling the perfume of the quiet outdoors.

If you fancy yourself a nomadic voyager or a man of the wilderness – or simply enjoy letting your fingers do your hiking to cabins in the woods from the safety of your computer – turn your birdwatching eye towards Juniper Ridge. Created by keen hiker and mushroom forager Hall Newbegin in 1998, Juniper Ridge produces four varietals of Backpacker’s Cologne through the sustainable harvesting and small-batch distillation of plants, bark, moss, mushrooms and trimmings.

Field notes of region of origin, harvest number and scent profile appear on each bottle’s label, with the brand also crafting bars of soap, cabin spray, campfire incense, tea leaves and liquid crew soap perfect for camping, or simply bringing the outdoors in. The Caruthers Canyon batch features desert pine sap, sagebrush and desert cedar from the Inyo backcountry, while the Siskiyou blend sees warm ginger, spicy cedar, driftwood, citrus and conifer come together – the ingredients sourced while hiking through Oregon’s forests.

Look out for our interview with Juniper Ridge founder Hall Newbegin in the March Cloth issue of map magazine, out March 7.
