The Aztecs dominated the Central American regions during the 14th Century with their complex architecture and violent rituals. For fashionistas, perhaps most notable was their sense of style – loosely fitting, draped cotton in contrasting patterns, accessorised with large gold jewellery, furs, skins and feathers.

For the past six months designers have been going gaga for the Aztec look. Houses that are typically associated with loud colour and print were first to climb on board – the collections of Jean Paul Gaultier, Matthew Williamson, Diane Von Furstenberg and print pioneers Missoni all exhibit an Aztec approach to colour, clashing and graphic print.

For the style savvy, it is easy to transform this look to fit any budget. The Aztec concept is simply about layering and print – let graphic patterns clash in a multitude of colours and designs. If minimalism is more your cup of tea, choose one graphic piece, be it a top or skirt, and pair it with basic black or white.

For a more modern street-savvy version of Aztec style, embrace the graphic trend but amp it up a notch. A clash of prints, patterns and colours could be found in the striking designs at the Holly Fulton and Mary Katrantzou shows in London.
