You beauty! Five simple ways to get healthy, glowing skin

It’s important to love the skin you’re in, but it can be difficult when that skin is dealing with cystic acne or hyperpigmentation. Sometimes we need a little extra help getting to the L-word stage with our complexions. Unfortunately, in the search for that help, we can quickly find ourselves buried in advice about ten-step skincare routines and bone-broth diets. It’s enough to bring on a breakout – not ideal. In an effort to save you all of that trouble, we’ve put together a few simple tips to help you get healthy, glowing skin.

Work from the inside, out
Before you jump online and click ‘add to cart’ on snail serum, fill up a real cart at your local supermarket. Good skin starts from within, which means diet is important. Focus on fresh foods rich in protein, healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamins. To help your skin create plumping collagen, cook up some protein like lean meat, eggs or tofu. To hydrate, plate up healthy fats like avocado or salmon. If your skin needs clearing, snack on some antioxidant-rich blueberries. Lastly, no matter what your skin concern, it’s essential to drink plenty of water.

Practice the right routine
While that diet gets to work on the inside, your skin needs attention on the outside too. Vitamin-rich skincare will treat and protect the delicate outer layers of your skin. It can feel like there’s a whole alphabet of vitamins to keep track of but we suggest focusing on just a few. If you’re suffering from skin damage, look for products containing Vitamin A – this ingredient helps with cell turnover and healing. If you’re feeling dry try vitamin E, which is known to hydrate. If you’re feeling dull look no further than Vitamin C, which brightens and protects your skin from pollution.

Start with a clean slate
That vitamin-rich skincare routine will work at its best when applied to clean skin. It might seem super simple but a thorough wash can do wonders for your complexion. Cleansing morning and night removes debris and dead skin cells from your face, allowing your products to sink right in. Exfoliating one to two times a week is the extra step that is equal parts satisfying and effective. This deep clean will leave your skin feeling super soft and touchable.

Three letters – SPF
It’s all fun in the sun until UV damage rears its ugly head. Queensland is unlucky enough to sit directly beneath one of the thinnest parts of the ozone layer, meaning our sun exposure is particularly severe. To prevent skin hyperpigmentation and more severe consequences like sun cancer, it’s essential to wear (and regularly reapply) a daily SPF. Think you skip the sunscreen on cloudy days? Think again – cloud cover only blocks sunlight, not the UV rays that can damage your skin.

Treat yourself to treatments
There are some skin treatments you cannot (and should not) try at home – it’s important to know when it’s time to let the professionals step in. Treat yourself to a day of pampering from a skincare professional that will have lasting benefits. Spring Hill’s Dr Lanzer can work with you towards your skin goals with a menu of treatments like glycolic acid peels, microdermabrasion and dermasweep. Don’t be intimidated by the names, these treatments are both effective and relaxing when performed by trained professionals.
