Are grilled-cheese tacos the next food craze? Five things we are vibing in June

We have now arrived at winter and the middle of the year, which means 2016 is about to heat up. Here are a few bits and pieces we are really digging this month.

The Katering Show
With the advent of MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules, cooking shows have reigned supreme on the weeknight television heap for the past five years. Cooking shows in general are always entertaining viewing but for kitchen illiterate persons such as myself, it’s almost akin to watching someone gorge on a flavoursome burger while you are burning your Vegemite toast. The Katering Show is a hilarious web series that pokes fun at cooking shows, eating habits and food trends. Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan are amazing as a food intolerant and an intolerable foodie respectively – tackling all the culinary tropes and making you feel okay about not being as much of a savvy chef as your Instagram connections. Do yourself a flavour (pun intended) and watch two seasons right now online.

Insane Tacos
Speaking of food (lets not kid ourselves, it’s all we talk about) there are a few tantalising taco hybrids popping up overseas that we wish would open up in Brisbane. Goa Taco in New York is renowned for creating Indian-inspired tacos using paratha, which is the buttery cousin of the traditional tortilla. These tacos are massive, weighing as much as two traditional tacos and are stuffed to bursting point with fillings such as paneer cheese, mojo beef, chicken chorizo or slow-roasted pork belly. If that doesn’t impress you, then cop this – a grilled-cheese taco. Popular blog The Food In My Beard has created this beautiful monument to food fusion – folding grilled cheese sandwiches and filling them with all sorts of stuffing. You want to know the best thing about these tacos? The recipe is online for you to try at home.

Football Nouveau
After food comes fashion, and those in the know are making a big deal about the new lust-worthy collaboration between Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing and iconic sportswear company Nike. The partnership has resulted in a range of pieces based around soccer (or football for all you purists), with a distinct black and gold aesthetic and sleek silhouettes. Football Nouveau is available as of Thursday June 2 from NikeLab retailers and online, and encompasses a few footwear choices, football jackets, sweats, shorts and tops.

TWE-Savoury_Spoons

Edible Cutlery
Back to food! This one is also for anyone who follows ethical and sustainable trends in food and manufacturing. Bakeys is an Indian company that has created an edible spoon – allowing you to chow down without having to worry about extra rubbish. The spoons are made from flour consisting of rice, wheat, jowar (a grain, also known as sorghum) and water and come in both savoury and sweet options. If you can’t possibly fit in another bite, these spoons are biodegradable and can be thrown away if desired. Now we just need edible plates … mmm.

TWE-WED

World Environment Day
Sunday June 5 is World Environment Day, a global event aimed at encouraging people to take care of the Earth and act as agents of change. The United Nations has spearheaded World Environment Day for decades, helping spread worldwide awareness on important issues as they pertain to the environment. People can get involved in World Environment Day by doing something on Sunday to help the environment. It doesn’t have to be on a huge scale or even involve other participants – it just needs to follow the theme of 2016, which is ‘Go Wild For Life’. Head to the World Environment Day website to see what you can do to help!
