The Weekend Series: from Raindrop Cake to PornBurger – five things we are vibing in April

April is here and with it comes a whole new bunch of food to eat, television shows to watch and culture to devour. Here are five things we loved so much throughout March that we had to share.

Food: Raindrop Cake
Why we vibin’: The Raindrop Cake (above) is the latest in bizarre food crazes that we are very curious to try, should it every come to Australia. Originally made in Japan, Raindrop Cake is set to make its debut in America, thanks to the work of cake maker Darren Wong. This dessert looks exactly like a raindrop has fallen from the sky and landed delicately on your plate, maintaining its shape but still boasting a close consistency with water. The cake is made using a combination of mineral water, agar and gelatines, which are largely flavourless so the cake is served with toppings such as soybean powder and brown sugar syrup.

NEWSFLASH: Raindrop cakes are now available in Australia! Check out Pavement Whispers for the details!

TWE-Broad-CityTelevision series: Broad City season three
Why we vibin’: Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have taken the comedy world by storm with their hit sitcom Broad City. The duo is currently mid-way through their third season, which is shaping up to be the best yet. To date the season has boasted celebrity cameos from the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Alan Alda, Blake Griffin and Hilary Clinton.

TWE-Pornburger
Book: Pornburger

Why we vibin’: Before you balk at the name, you should know that this cookbook is G-rated – that is unless you get hot under the collar for stacks of meat patties, soft buns and salacious sides. PornBurger is a strictly health-unconscious cookbook that has been created by Washington DC chef and food stylist Matthew Ramsey – a craftsmen of delicious excess. Ogle at the downright silly creations such as the ‘James Francophile’ with pickled beets, truffled demi-glace, Gruyère de Comté, beef patty, bone marrow onion jam, potato-chip-crusted fois gras gougère or the ‘Horn Dog’ with clover honey, whole kernel corn jalapeño batter, slow-roasted pork belly, pickled hot dog, and two smash-cooked beef patties. Feeling a bit short of breath? Check out the cookbook on Amazon and get ready for some alone time – cooking in the kitchen, that is.

TWE-OLO-3DTech: OLO Smartphone 3D Printer
Why we vibin’:
As we progress further into the future, we are gradually realising the near-unlimited potential of the mobile phone. Beyond communication, games and watching videos of cats, our smartphones will soon be able to print 3D objects with the touch of a button. 3D printing is fast becoming the new way of manufacturing and soon we’ll be able to engineer and construct small objects at a fraction of the cost of a industrial 3D printer thanks to OLO’s new and inventive approach. Head to OLO’s Kickstarter page to see how it works and how you can hopefully get your hands on the technology in the not-to-distant future.

TWE-The-Goon-Sax
Album: The Goon Sax – Up To Anything
Why we vibin’: Brisbane indie-popsters The Goon Sax are about to have a very big year. The three-piece just released its debut album Up To Anything through the storied label Chapter Music, filled with jangly gems detailing teenage love, rejection, vulnerability and feeling out of sorts in one’s own skin. Up To Anything boasts songwriting that belies the group’s relative youthfulness, but stacks up well to anything that has emerged from Australia’s indie scene in the past five years.
