Edith Head, Audrey Hepburn’s stylist, gives you fashion tips

There are certain women who have been innately (and frustratingly) stylish since birth. Audrey, Grace, Jane, Gwyneth … we’re enviously referring to you.

But often there is a shrewdly fashion-savvy mind behind the starlet, who is responsible for ensuring minimal faux pas both onscreen and off. In the case of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor, that mind belonged to costumer designer, Edith Head.

Known for her knack for accentuating the best and ensconcing the worst, Edith won eight Academy Awards and was nominated for a total of 35 for her work on films such as Roman Holiday, To Catch A Thief, Funny Face and Sabrina.

First published in 1967, Edith’s style bible How to Dress for Success advised women of the day on important sartorial matters such as “How to Dress to Get A Man … and Keep Him” (hint: make yourself interesting to look at and interesting to be with) and “Successories” (any woman who invents her own word surely knows her stuff). The updated version, released in 2009 by V&A Publishing, is a necessary addition to the book collection of any lass yearning to make a mark in the style stakes.

While copies are far and few between, local sightings of the purple-hued book have previously been made at Cafe Bouquiniste and Coaldrake’s. Otherwise, you can track a copy down online.
