Dead Kooks surfboards

Ride summer’s waves with a Dead Kooks surfboard

Summer officially arrives this weekend, bringing with it the desire to head to the beach, dowse ourselves in saltwater and ride some waves. Hand-shaping surf sleds that nod to the styles of 1960s and 1970s is local surfboard maker Dead Kooks.

Based in Currumbin on the Gold Coast, Dead Kooks is the creation of Eden Saul. Resurrecting the shapes of vintage models, pushing the classics into new places through constant refinement, Dead Kooks brings a modern and artisan flavour to fiberglass vessels. Hand-shaped with form, function and design in mind, each board is made to order, with Eden working from a bread-and-butter range of seven models, with the leeway to dabble in custom designs.

From classic Simmons and Hulls to old-school Logs and Pigs, Dead Kooks boards are embedded with character without forgoing speed and versatility. The Hellhound is a rework of the Tracker-style single fins that bloomed in the late 1960s, with a rolled-nose entry and a ten-inch flex fin built to enhance speed, while the Babi Guling is a traditional Pig, with big hips, a tucked nose and plenty of belly roll in tribute to the model’s glory days of the late 1950s to early 1960s.
