The Weekend Series: five must-see movie trailers from San Diego Comic-Con

It’s that time of the year where we all go crazy for blockbusters. Although there are plenty of great flicks out at the moment to see, we are already looking forward to next year (and the year after) when some history-making films are set for release. San Diego Comic-Con is one of the biggest entertainment conventions in the world and it always brings the goods when it comes to big announcements and movie trailers. Here are five that have got us frothing in excitement.

Wonder Woman
Okay, so Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice left a lot to be desired critically, but it did pave the way for one of the most under-appreciated characters in DC’s universe to get her own movie. Wonder Woman will hit screens in 2017, and will star Gal Gadot as the titular Amazon princess. First glimpses of the film show that it will pack just as much action as other comic book films, but it will be Gadot’s performance as one of the most iconic female superheros that will be the biggest talking point. Also of note is the new trailer for Justice League, which will see Battfleck, Superman and Wonder Woman linking up with some new faces to save the world from encroaching threats.

Doctor Strange
The next cab of the comic book rank is Doctor Strange, which is slated for release in November. One of the more mystical characters in the Marvel Comic universe, Doctor Strange differs considerably than your current crop of masked Avengers. His powers lie in the magical arts, which means a wildly different set of powers and a host of powerful enemies. Benedict Cumberbatch dons the cape of the Sorcerer Supreme, who is taught the ways of magic by Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One. Other familiar faces include Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
It’s been a long time between drinks for Harry Potter fans, and while the bespectacled hero won’t be returning to the silver screen any time soon, fans of JK Rowling’s magical universe have been waiting with baited breath for news of the movie adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Based on the book of the same name, Fantastic Beasts takes audiences back in time before the saga of The Boy Who Lived and He Who Shall Not Be Named, following a young wizard Newt Scamander who unwittingly unleashes several wondrous and dangerous animals loose in New York City. Expect this flick to apparate into cinemas in November.

The LEGO Batman Movie
The LEGO Movie
was one of the highest grossing and most popular movies of 2014, thanks in no small part to the huge amount of personality and humour conveyed by the iconic toys come to life. Although The LEGO Movie was an incredible ensemble performance, the sure-fire scene-stealer of the flick was LEGO Batman, voiced by Will Arnett. The Dark Prince of Gotham is returning to our screens in his own film, which will see Will Arnett reprise his role, joined by the likes of Michael Cera and Robin, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker.

Kong: Skull Island
Let’s be honest – who doesn’t love a good monster flick? The silver screen has brought to life dozens of larger-than-large monsters, and King Kong is assuredly one of the most imposing. Kong: Skull Island sees Tom Hiddleston step into a leading role, joining a team of explorers who venture to an uncharted island in the Pacific – unbeknownst to them the home of the giant, skyscraper-scaling gorilla. The all-star cast features Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilley and more. Expect Kong to smash into theatres in the first half of 2017.

Honourable mentions: Blair Witch, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Trainspotting 2, Bad Santa 2
