Chasing Mavericks

The surf’s way up in new film Chasing Mavericks

Surfer duds get ready, Chasing Mavericks has hit the big screen, bringing with it some impressive footage of some of the biggest waves in the world.

Based on the true story of determined young surfer Jay Moriarity, Chasing Mavericks focuses on this surfing phenomenon’s first-time try at Mavericks. A thought-to-be mythic surf break at Calirfornia’s Half Moon Bay, Mavericks serves up some epic waves. Newcomer Jonny Weston plays Jay Moriarity in this biopic, who found success at 16 when he was filmed conquering the infamous waves at Mavericks. Not limited to a short or long board, Jay quickly became a major figure in the surfing world for his versatility, athleticism and winning smile.

In Chasing Mavericks, Jay enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive surfing the big waves. Co-directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted, Chasing Mavericks was made with the assistance of some of the biggest names in the surfing industry and captures some incredible real wave footage. For those keen to explore this water legend’s ways further, Jay also co-authored a book entitled The Ultimate Guide to Surfing before his death in 2001 at the age of 23.
