Pull out your pushy for Bike Week

Pull out your pushy for Bike Week

The mantra for this year’s Bike Week is Eat. Sleep. Ride. Repeat. But we also suggest you weave showering into that regime, as you’ll be working up a sweat at the range of events planned for the cycling festival.

It’s time to dust off the handlebars and hit the pavement for Bike Week. Organised by Bicycle Queensland since the early 1990s, Bike Week is an annual reminder to ride more and drive less. Not only is riding your bike a win for the environment, but the old ticker doesn’t mind a spot of cycling either.

More than 20 free events make up this year’s schedule of festivities, which kick off on Saturday April 26 and run until May 4. During the week, there are film nights and a 10-Speed Dating event for those looking for someone to share their tandem bicycle, as well as The Great Brisbane Bike Ride, Ride to Work Day and the BDO Brisbane to Coot-tha Challenge.

On Thursday May 1, Phil Smith and Andrew Demack from The Squeaky Wheel will host a Q&A discussion of ‘A New Direction for Cycling in Queensland’. Joining Phil and Andrew for the chat to be held at ABC studios is Transport Minister Scott Emerson MP, and the chair of Active Transport for Brisbane City Council, Cr Peter Matic.

Whether you enjoy leisurely weekend rides or commute via bicycle, taking part in events such as Bike Week helps to raise the profile of cycling, ensuring issues such as access to bike paths remain firmly on the public agenda.
