Add curve to your collar with Ralph Lauren

From the school-boy uniform to preppy gentleman attire, the club collar has wound in and out of fashion history since its inception in the 1850s.

Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton College in the UK is a renowned school for boys, and it was here in the 1850s that the club collar was first conceived.

Introduced as part of the updated uniform, the rounded collar became a symbol of exclusivity – of belonging to Eton. Reproduced outside of the college, the collar was worn by the masses, all attempting to appear part of the exclusive Eton ‘club’.

Peaking in the 1920s, the beloved, round-point collars soon became a thing of the past; too much of a good thing, perhaps? But with modern-day gents’ sartorial awareness growing, a club collared dress shirt is a dapper accompaniment to a man’s attire.

A staple in the preppy wardrobe, the club collar can be paired with a collar pin secured beneath the tie knot. Pop in to Ralph Lauren on Edward Street in the CBD to view the Custom-fit Vintage Club Shirt from the Yale Club Collection, paired with an elbow-patched blazer.
