The round-up: where to get your dance on in Brisbane City

There are two kinds of people in this world – those who love to dance, and the mean jerk minister from Footloose. There’s something so cathartic about moving your body around to music, and even if you’re no Beyoncé it’s still a great way to get the endorphins pumping. You might not think of the City as a hot dancing destination, but we have news for you – there are plenty of places to boogie down. Whether you’re keen to shake it like a Polaroid picture to throwback classics or smash out a killer routine to the sounds of a live band, we’ve scouted out the best places to get your dance on in Brisbane City.

Brooklyn Standard: When it comes to places to get your dance on in Brisbane City, it doesn’t get much better than Brooklyn Standard. This slick-as-heck dive bar boasts live music six nights a week, and it’s not your standard pub covers. Offering up Mariachi Mondays, rollicking blues and straight up rock’n’roll, you’ll have a hard time staying in your seat at Brooklyn Standard.

Sonny’s House of Blues: Sonny’s lives up to its name, hosting the best in local and national talent that will get your toes tappin’ and your hips shakin’ in true Southern style. The small but mighty stage opens up to a bit of a serious dancefloor situation, providing plenty of room to jump and jive. Sonny’s is the sort of place where you end up making best friends with strangers and engaging in dance-offs – you’re welcome.

Embassy Bar: If jazz, soul and blues are what you crave, Embassy has them in spades. Friday nights are dedicated to live bands playing tunes that were made for grooving to, mixing it up with a range of genres that all provide the perfect soundtrack to your impending weekend. After-work drinks have never been so appealing!

Super Whatnot: This cool, unassuming laneway bar sets weekend vibes to maximum, playing host to some of Brisbane’s best DJs. If top 40 hits aren’t your jam, Super Whatnot has got you covered – the tastes here are a little more eclectic but certainly don’t skimp on dance-ability. The bar space is small but powerful, offering enough room to ensure you can drop it like it’s hot if you’re so inclined.

Stock Exchange: Don’t let the name fool you – the only business going down at the Stock Exchange is the mother-heckin’ PARTY business! This is the place to go for a classic club vibe – think hip-hop, R&B and party jams that were pretty much written explicitly for the purpose of shaking your moneymaker to. DJs spin top tunes late into the night, so make sure you pack your party flats.

Blackbird: Blackbird offers the best of both worlds when it comes to nocturnal activity. Feel like dancing to some jams played by rad DJs? Sure. Would you rather get down to the sounds of some live music? No worries. If you can tear your eyes away from the amazing river views, you’ll find yourself tearing up the dancefloor to the tune of classics and current jams.

Bar Pacino: We know you’re probably across the R&B Fridays phenomenon, but Saturdays are the time when Bar Pacino really gets jiggy with it. It’s common knowledge that old-school R&B was made for some serious wiggling – all you have to do is listen to the lyrical content and you’ll know what to do with your limbs. Add Nutella shots and a killer view and you’re looking at a very baller night.

Friday’s Riverside: This here is a Brisbane institution – anyone born and raised in the River City will be well aware that Friday’s is a tried and true dancing location. Once the weekend rolls around, the beats start pumping and the drinks start flowing. Weave your way through the flashing lights of the club to the sounds of current party hits – this is your classic nightclub setting done just right.

Jade Buddha: Hola amigos! You may think Sunday nights are for Netflix and chill, but the folks at Jade Buddha have better ideas. Bust out those Cuban heels for Salsa Sundays, where beginners and seasoned pros mix and mingle to the sounds of sexy Latin beats. Dancers often come from interstate to join in the fun, so you know it’s legit.
