Bite into a traditional English pork pie from Wensley’s Traditional Fine Fayre
A pork pie is a traditional British meat pie consisting of roughly chopped pork and pork jelly sealed in a hot-water crust pastry. What many people may not know is that pork pies are normally eaten cold as a snack or as part of a meal.
Tony Wensley of Wensley’s Traditional Fine Fayre began making traditional British foods more than 20 years ago as a baker in the famous market town of Melton Mowbray, England. The most famous English pork pie originated in Melton Mowbray in the 18th century due to local pig farming.
Before immigrating to Australia in 2004, Tony Wensley was the bakery manager of one of the oldest and most prestigious bakeries in Melton Mowbray, the renowned Olde Pork Pie Shoppe. Tony came to Australia with other-than-pork-pie plans, but was soon drawn back to the industry he knows best and has been providing Southeast Queensland and beyond with the finest of pork pies, Cornish pasties, cheese and onion pasties, scotch eggs, cherry bakewells and eccles cakes since.
With the rise of his wholesale trade, Wensley’s has reduced its market attendance back to just the Moggill Markets at Brookfield. Tony feels strongly that the not-for-profit market philosophy and reinvesting funds back into the community and charity fits well with Wensley’s goals.
