Vulture's Treat, South Brisbane

Swampdog opens Vulture’s Treat coffee shop

The old Swampdog has a new mate. He may have a nasty habit of pilfering cupcakes, but his coffees are so good we’d forgive this vulture just about anything.

There’s a feathered brute catching eyes along the rippling peaks and dips of Vulture Street. But look between the sweet-toothed bird and his cupcake prey, and you’ll discover Vulture’s Treat – a brand-new coffee joint tucked beside South Brisbane institution Swampdog Fish and Chips. Taking the phrase ‘hole in the wall’ to the literal extreme, the caffeine pit-stop has popped up in the Swampdog storage room and is now offering Blackstar Coffee alongside slices of sweetness.

Pull up a chair beside the wall art painted by local emerging artist Joel ‘The Zookeeper’ Fergie or retreat to Swampdog’s open courtyard for a side of fresh air with your chocolate brownie. Eyes will bulge bigger than the vulture’s at the creations in the dessert cabinet, which currently include chocolate roulade with strawberry mascarpone and a brazo de mercedes meringue beating with a gooey butterscotch heart. If the Brisbane heat has gotten its clammy claws into you, cool down with a range of bottled juices and Thankyou Water, or wait til the sun dips and pop in for dessert and coffee in the evening.
