Hot scoop! Ungermann Brothers opens its swingin’ new ice-cream parlour
The last time we saw Ben Ungermann, he was winning our hearts (and subsequently breaking them) as the eventual runner-up on 2017’s series of MasterChef. After his hugely successful run on television, Ben immediately set out capitalising on his star turn by opening up one of the most anticipated dessert destinations with his brother Danny. The boys have recently opened up Ungermann Brothers Ice-Cream parlour in Ipswich, immediately winning us over again with a killer range of icy treats.
Before Ben Ungermann shot to stardom on MasterChef, he’d never even dabbled in making sweets. When the show pushed him outside his comfort zone and his aptitude for making sweet, sweet culinary magic manifested, Ben was encouraged to take it further, and as soon as the show finished he began crafting the recipes that would comprise Ungermann Brothers Ice Cream. After a period of experimentation and trial and error, Ben debuted his own range at the Good Food and Wine Show in the latter half of 2017, and hype started to build for Ben’s own bricks-and-mortar parlour. The location of the spot was kept closely under wraps until the start of the new year, and on Australia Day, Ben and his brother Danny opened the doors of Ungermann Brothers Ice-Cream Parlour in the heart of their home town of Ipswich, stirring up a frenzy with the promise of some gourmet, crafted scoops. The parlour can be found on Limestone Street, inside a gorgeous heritage-listed building that also houses Pumpyard Bar & Brewery and Dovetails Restaurant, and features a striking electro-swing aesthetic that blends the retro cool of old-school ice creameries with more modern aspects. The space also boasts a walk-through kitchen were you can glimpse the Ungermann brothers at work – crafting and scooping the ice-cream in an engrossing display of kitchen theatre.
At Ungermann Brothers Ice-Cream Parlour, Ben and Danny are scooping out a range of organic ice-cream made on site, with all choices being 100-percent natural and handmade using locally sourced ingredients. The selection boasts an incredible array of inventive flavours that will pique interest and tantalise the tastebuds. How does the likes of lavender honeycomb, pumpkin seed (using Slovenian pumpkin seed oil), liquorice and fennel, roasted garlic and fairy-bread ice-cream sound? Even the classics have been given a gourmet spin, as evidenced by the dark chocolate and mandarin, salted caramel with bacon and pecan and strawberry balsamic flavours. Patrons can order ice-cream by the scoop in cones, cups or served up as a dessert tasting plate. New flavours will appear as seasons change, while Ben is looking to secure a liquor license to serve spiked milkshakes using his own ice-cream. Also on the cards is a series of dessert degustations, and let’s face it – you’ll definitely want to spend some time sampling these.
