Get a boost from Fortitude Valley’s colourful coffee pit stop UltraViolet
The Spring Hill-end of Brunswick Street has long been a neglected part of the busy promenade, a peculiarly quiet zone despite sitting just a few hundred metres away from the entertainment precinct. Committed to bolstering the area’s fun quota is UltraViolet Coffee – an eye-catching hole-in-the-wall dispensary that’s injecting some colour into Fortitude Valley’s fringe.
When Bianca Macklin-Cordes, Abbie Bryant and Alexander Clarke came up with the idea to transform an under-utilised shopfront at performance art theatre hub BackDock Arts into a coffee dispensary, it only took three weeks to make it a reality. Seeing a need on their end of Brunswick Street for a commuter-friendly takeaway pit stop, the trio decided to dip into their love of hospitality at fill the need themselves. After a flurry of DIY activity, UltraViolet Coffee opened to the public on Tuesday September 1. Looking to offset BackDock’s dark and grungy entrance with a colourful counterpoint, the team elected to give UltraViolet a vivid colour scheme to reflect its name. A combo of mint green, purple and orange make for a sharp contrast to Brunswick Street’s established palette of grey, with a can’t-miss-it facade catching the eye of foot and car traffic alike. While UltraViolet is a window kiosk-style operation, a few footpath benches provide seating for folks with time to linger.
The UltraViolet team has fashioned a culinary offering that suits the venue’s minimal footprint, favouring locally made essentials that people crave when on the go. Naturally, coffee is a primary focus – Fonzie Abbott has been recruited as the supplier of choice, with soy, almond, oat and lactose-free milk alternatives on deck as well. Beyond coffee, sippers can opt for juices from Emma & Tom’s or a craft soda made by the crew at Netherworld (flavours include grapefruit and elderflower, and coffee with butterscotch). UltraViolet’s selection of bites are similarly perfect for devouring on the move, with NYC Bagel Deli bagels available with a selection of spreads (cream cheese, peanut butter, avocado, Biscoff, Nutella and Vegemite), pretzels, cheesy bacon rolls, fresh fruit, yoghurt tubs and delicious gluten-, grain-, dairy- and refined-sugar-free treats from Gluten Freeky. UltraViolet is also committed to being eco-friendly, with biodegradable coffee cups and straws making your morning coffee run a guilt-free exercise.
