Native to Indonesia but now successfully planted in wet and humid climates across Asia as well as in Far North Queensland, the mangosteen is sweet and tangy and a source of powerful antioxidants.

Unique for its appearance and flavour, mangosteen is often referred to as ‘the queen’ of tropical fruits. This exotic, round, purple-coloured fruit is popular for its snow-white, juicy, fibrous and fragrant flesh. Suitable only for tropical climates, there are currently three large plantings in the wet tropics of North Queensland at Bloomfield, Babinda and Innisfail.

Interestingly mangosteens contain xanthones, a type of chemical in certain plants that are believed to be powerful antioxidants as well as containing anti-inflammatory propertiesResearchers have discovered more than 200 xanthones altogether, 40 of which are found in the mangosteen fruit, preventing and possibly even stopping a wide range of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other chronic diseases.

Mangosteen has such a delicious floral taste that it is usually served very simply. Add the juice of a mangosteen to a granita or jelly or serve the fruit segments in a fresh fruit salad. Mangosteen also works well with lemongrass syrup, chamomile and lemon juice. The juice is often used by Thai cooks in various savoury dishes to add a sweet note.

Pick up your mangosteen at Tril Fruit Market at the Kelvin Grove Village Market this weekend.
