Heritage Tomatoes

Russian Brandy Wyne tomatoes in season at Jan Power Markets

While the winter season traditionally brings us earthy vegetables like spuds and Brussels sprouts, some juicy reds (or yellows, pinks and blacks) are also in season.

Growing tomatoes of all shapes, sizes and colours is Peter Sutton, with wife Carmel in charge of picking the ripe ones ready to sell at the Jan Power Farmers Markets. Based in the Lockyer Valley, Peter and Carmel’s heritage tomatoes range from Speckled Romas with thin streaks of yellow, through red to Pearly Pinks and Black Plums. Grown from seeds sourced from all over the world, a heritage tomato is defined by a planted tomato seed blossoming into a fruit true to its type.

With the wintery chill hitting the air, Russian varieties are currently in season. Try the Brandy Wynes – a lumpy, un-spherical gem bursting with juicy flavour – in yellow or pink. Peter and Carmel have been growing coloured tomatoes for four years, sourcing any purely red grape or cherry tomatoes from neighbours or family to stock up their stall at all of Jan Power’s markets and the Kelvin Grove Market each Saturday.
