Tippler’s Tap opens Tomahawk Bar in South Bank

The craft beer doyens behind Newstead’s Tippler’s Tap have opened a cosy new drinking den in South Bank.

The long stretch of Grey Street was blessed with a jolly new face this week, with watering hole Tomahawk Bar finally opening its doors yesterday. The knowledgeable fellows from Newstead bar Tippler’s Tap will continue to champion the small, independent players on the craft beer scene at their new South Bank location, with 13 rotating taps and a congregation of bottled beers on offer. Co-owners Brian Kennedy and Emily Russell, along with leading man Carl Rhodes, have ensured a well-balanced selection of beers to suit all tastes and levels of beer-guzzling experience. So whether you’re a beginner beer drinker who enjoys a more palatable pale ale or lager, or a discerning beer geek who is up for a challenge, the taphouse can provide. Those in need of a beer break can also opt for a glass of wine or cider.

Executive chef Ali Orchard is paying homage to the essential ingredients that form your drink of choice by featuring them in some truly innovative dishes. Snack on hopcorn chicken with salted caramel and crumbed seafood chowder sticks with red ale chilli jam, or tuck in to a heartier dish of slow-cooked meatballs with toasted barley or the sticky stout lamb ribs served with mint yoghurt. The standout whole hop-smoked rainbow trout for two is sure to line the belly well, but you’ll no doubt need to undo a few buttons to fit in the housemade beer-infused ice-cream with warm malt.
